Chemistry: 6.4 Shorthand for Electrons 33 Views
Share It!
Description:
Today we'll learn a shorthand way of noting the electrons in an element. You may notice it still seems a little long. Hm. Maybe someone could come up with a shorthand for the shorthand? A mini-hand? Tiny-hand? Baby-hand? Wugh. Now we're just thinking of tons of wiggly baby-hands.

There's a reason that we can't show you the faces of these three [3 elements in the dark]
- 00:07
elements they're about to enter the witness protection program let's just
- 00:11
say that all three of them were witnesses to a heinous crime committed
- 00:15
by the notorious hafnium oh yeah they're going to need some new identity rather
- 00:20
than just naming them something like Paul or Cindy the Bureau has decided to [Man gives element the name Cindy]
Full Transcript
- 00:26
give them new names according to their respective electron configuration so we
- 00:30
know what you're thinking, would that really protect their identities, well for sure
- 00:34
This first element is
- 00:40
located here on the periodic table to be assigned a new name the bureau must look [Girl looking through binoculars]
- 00:44
at how many electrons the elements has in which orbitals S, P, D or F well going
- 00:50
from left to right and top to bottom the 1s orbital appears to be full with two
- 00:55
electrons as is the 2s orbital and then there are four electrons in the 2p
- 01:00
orbital so this elements new name becomes 1s2, 2s2, 2p4 we're sure
- 01:08
they'll screw that one up at Starbucks but that's the price you pay for [Electron at starbucks]
- 01:11
anonymity our second element is located here on the periodic table just as with
- 01:16
our first element the 1s and the 2s orbitals are full but here the 2p
- 01:20
orbital is full as well along with just one electron in the 3s orbital so this
- 01:26
new elements name will be 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s1 and finally we have this element
- 01:32
right here the 1s 2s 2p3 S3p and 4s orbitals are all full and there are [Finger points to element on periodic table]
- 01:39
one two three electrons in the 3d orbital so the new name....
- 01:45
you might want to save this one on your contact list on your iPhone 1s2 2s2
- 01:50
2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d3.... signing legal documents will be apain... yep these three are ready
- 01:59
to head out into various corners of the world and blend in and well disappear [Elements appear from the dark]
- 02:02
our thanks to oxygen, sodium and vanadium for their time....
