No when we think of world war we think of

00:05

europe right on one side of the conflict there was

00:08

germany austria hungary the ottoman empire and bulgaria On the

00:12

other side there was great britain france russia and serbia

00:16

remember however that a number of these countries held territory

00:19

in the middle east africa and asia So once these

00:22

european nations started fighting it didn't take long for the

00:25

conflict to move beyond europe to other parts of the

00:28

world One area that saw a lot of action during

00:31

world war one was the middle east While the ottoman

00:34

empire controlled the region it was hemmed into the north

00:37

by russia into the southwest by the british in egypt

00:41

This was a problem for the ottomans See the british

00:44

were very interested in getting a better grip on the

00:46

middle east because of their stake in the suez canal

00:49

which the british used to ship goods from their colonies

00:52

in asia Back to europe So in nineteen sixteen when

00:56

arab nationalism sparked a revolt against the ottoman empire the

00:59

british felt compelled to step in and help a brother

01:01

out Jolly good chums eh Well their contribution to the

01:05

revolt was an army intelligence officer an archaeologist named theodore

01:10

edward lawrence better known as yes lawrence of arabia Oh

01:15

they also contributed money and guns can't forget those Well

01:18

the arabs agreed to ally themselves with the british in

01:21

exchange for independence once world war was over in july

01:25

nineteen seventeen arab forces led by buddha aboot tae i

01:30

advised by lawrence attacked the port of aqaba in jordan

01:34

Not only did the arabs take aqaba but they successfully

01:38

sabotaged infrastructure important to the ottoman empire including a railroad

01:42

that ran from damascus to dina lawrence didn't just service

01:45

an adviser to the arabs He also convinced them that

01:48

the only way to defeat the ottomans was as a

01:50

united force Well in the end it was this force

01:54

and it's british backers that defeated the ottoman empire and

01:56

captured territory that included lebanon and what was then called

01:59

palestine Now let's Take a little hop over to africa

02:03

which as you may recall was almost completely controlled by

02:06

various european powers at the beginning of world war While

02:10

germany had four african colonies including togoland cameroon southwest africa

02:16

and german east africa the rest of the continent was

02:19

claimed by nations that were part of the allied powers

02:23

Well these countries saw the war is a chance not

02:25

only to beat the pants off the germans but take

02:27

over germany's colonies Well in order to accomplish this african

02:31

troops were needed If you're feeling totally act out by

02:34

this well don't worry you're not alone It was heinous

02:37

that the allies would ask the africans they had conquered

02:41

to pretty please back them up in a war that

02:43

africans had no part in starting While many africans hoped

02:47

they would win independence from their european overlords by working

02:50

as soldiers or laborers during the conflict well that didn't

02:52

really pan out did it Nor did the colonies that

02:55

had belonged to germany become independent after the war the

02:58

allies also pulled people from their colonies in asia to

03:01

help out with the war effort while one un colonized

03:04

asian country that through its hat in the ring for

03:07

the allies was japan which declared war on germany within

03:10

days of the conflict starting in europe It wasn't that

03:13

the japanese were altruistic like the allies in africa they

03:17

wanted germany's territories in east asia which included a port

03:20

City in china part of new guinea and a scattering

03:23

of pacific islands well ultimately the japanese and forces from

03:27

new zealand and australia captured the city of sink towel

03:31

as well as other german holdings This was only the

03:34

beginning of japan's conquest of east asia Over the next

03:37

couple of decades the japanese would make serious inroads into

03:40

neighboring nations inciting a conflict that would feed into a

03:44

world war Two So while world war one might be

03:47

famous for the fighting in europe it was called a

03:50

world war for a reason even if the world really 00:03:53.77 --> [endTime] would have preferred to be left alone
