Mr. Welland

Character Analysis

Mr. Welland is May's father, a hopeless hypochondriac, which is ironic given his name (a pun on well+ land). The family revolves around the threat of possible illness; if he's worried about a cold, it's off to Florida they go. He's a ridiculous figure. Mr. Welland makes you wonder: Is being born into an elite family really grounds for considering yourself superior to everyone else? Short answer: no.
