Character Analysis
Marchioness Manson is one of Mrs. Manson Mingott's daughters, and is Ellen's guardian for much of her life. Like the Mingott daughters, the Marchioness has had (by New York standards) an unconventional upbringing in Europe. Unlike other New Yorkers, Medora Manson has married several times, including marriages with non-New Yorkers.
She's also a hot mess: always getting cheated out of her money by gold-digging husbands. She’s an inveterate traveler and irrepressibly romantic. She believes Ellen should return to the Count— not because it's wrong to divorce, but because the Count can give her a fabulous, romantic lifestyle that would make up for his scumbagginess.
