Here’s your shmoop du jour, brought to you by Sweaters.

00:06

A word of warning: don’t ever wear them while herding sheep.

00:12

A sweater is on sale for 25% off the original price. Beth has a coupon for an additional

00:17

10% off the sale price. What is the total discount (as a percent)?

00:23

Okay, so even though this problem doesn’t give us the original price of the sweater,

00:27

we have enough information to find the answer.

00:29

25% off means that Beth is paying 75% of the original price.

00:35

10% off the sale price means that Beth is paying 90% of that 75% of the original price.

00:42

All we have to do is multiply the decimal forms of those percents.

00:46

And we get 0.9 times 0.75 is 0.675. Or 67.5% of the original price.

00:54

The original price is 100%.

00:57

So we can subtract 100% by the percentage Beth is actually paying 67.5%...

01:02

to get the percent discount.

01:04

Got that? 100% - 67.5% equals 32.5%...

01:10

So the percent discount is 32.5% and we're done.
