Leadership with friends…..a la Shmoop.
- 00:06
This is Sarah. [Finger points to Sarah]
- 00:07
Sarah comes from a family of leaders.
- 00:10
Her mother is the head of her company, Widget World.
- 00:13
Her father is a teacher and head of the history department at his school. [Sarah's Father in a library]

- 00:16
Her brother is captain of the water polo team.
- 00:20
And her sister is head of the spirit and debate teams. [Sarah's Sister giving a speech]
- 00:23
Even Sarah’s dog is a pack leader.
- 00:25
So…you would think that, when it came to her friends, Sarah would be a natural born leader, right? [Sarah stood with her friend]
- 00:31
Wrong. At the start of school, Sarah finds she doesn’t
- 00:34
quite fit in with most of the regular cliques. She’s just sort of… invisible.
- 00:39
But that's invisible without the benefit of being able to sneak into federally restricted areas. [Invisible Sarah stealing a sandwich from Obama]
- 00:45
She doesn’t fit in with the jocks…
- 00:46
…or the brainiacs.
- 00:47
She doesn’t play an instrument… [Sarah playing a guitar on stage]
- 00:48
…or care to perform on stage.
- 00:50
She does, however, like Star Wars.
- 00:52
She likes Star Wars… a lot.
- 00:53
She has a Star Wars shirt for every day of the week. [Sarah wearing a Star Wars shirt for each day of the week]
- 00:56
And every color light sabre.
- 00:58
She’s seen each of the movies…many times... and has read all the books. [Sarah with Star Wars DVD's and books]
- 01:01
When it comes time for club rush at her school, she is horrified to find out that…there
- 01:04
is no Star Wars club. The horror, the horror…
- 01:08
So…she decides to make one herself. A Star Wars club.
- 01:10
The Force is strong in this one… [Sarah holding a light saber with two members of the Star Wars club]
- 01:13
Sarah thinks maybe one or two people might join her club.
- 01:16
But it turns out to be one of the most popular clubs in her school… and she ends up having [Lots of people gathered together in a street]
- 01:20
a ton of people sign up.
- 01:22
If she suddenly flaked or got intimidated by the response, all these people would be
- 01:25
sitting in an empty room… [Star Wars club members sitting in a room waiting]
- 01:27
…and there would never even be a Star Wars club. The Dark side would win. Can’t have that.
- 01:35
Sarah decides to go through with it. Gulp.
- 01:37
Before you know it, Sarah is leading a room full of kids who love Star Wars as much as she does. [Lots of kids in a discussion]
- 01:41
And because she’s an expert in all things Skywalker…
- 01:44
She quickly earns the other kids’ respect.
- 01:46
And she's not afraid to be asked any Star Wars trivia questions. [Sarah participating in a trivia contest]
- 01:51
The more kids get to know Sarah, the more they recognize that she’s a totally loyal friend.
- 01:56
A patient leader who is willing to explain the plot of Star Wars to other kids who have [Sarah stood by the school bus with a man dressed as an astronaut]
- 01:59
never even seen it before.
- 02:02
Some kids from another club even invite Sarah to consult on the theme for this year’s
- 02:06
prom dance, which just happens to be…
- 02:08
You guessed it, Star Wars. This school has definitely found its nerd button. [Finger pushes a nerd button]
- 02:12
And it is owning it.
- 02:13
Obviously, Sarah is happy to comply.
- 02:16
Before you know it, she has plenty of friends who want to sit with her at lunch time. [Sarah sat with friends at lunch and reads Star Wars books]
- 02:18
And plenty of offers for study partners. And a few dates out there as well.
- 02:23
Prospective colleges are impressed by Sarah, too. Colleges love leaders…because leaders
- 02:28
are innovators and creators. They see the need and, instead of ignoring it, they show
- 02:33
others how to make things happen.
- 02:35
Not only are colleges impressed by such leadership… but they also give out special scholarships for leaders. [A bottle of water and wads of dollar bills pile up]
- 02:42
And then, beyond college, companies are always looking for those with leadership skills to
- 02:46
take charge and manage people and projects. Or…fire people, if that’s what’s needed.
- 02:50
Fun job.
- 02:52
Who knows, Sarah might decide to direct her own Star Wars-esque film one day… and the [Sarah directing a Star Wars film]
- 02:57
leadership skills she acquired back in high school might come in handy.
- 03:00
But, that’s all… in the future.
- 03:02
Still in high school, Sarah writes about her club to Disney and gets everybody invited [Sarah placing an envelope into a mail box]
- 03:06
to a special showing of the new Star Wars film.
- 03:09
Before you know it, Sarah can be considered a bona fide leader.
- 03:12
All because she was true to herself and didn’t feel the need to force her way into a group [Sarah with two guys dressed in Star Wars clothing]
- 03:16
that wasn’t her thing just to, you know… not be alone.
- 03:21
And for this reason, Sarah was never invisible again.
- 03:24
Although…she did appear as a hologram once or twice… [Sarah with R2D2 as a hologram]
