Deep in the Shmoop of Texas a la Shmoop

00:10

Hi, I’m Dave Siminoff, the founder of Shmoop. They say everything is bigger in Texas.

00:14

This truism certainly has applied to our backsides ever since we tried your short ribs.

00:19

We at Shmoop are all about bigger and better, and we can “yee-haw” with the best of

00:23

them. You just won’t see us on one of those mechanical

00:26

bulls. Either way, we are certainly down with the

00:31

longhorn-sized enthusiasm that Texans seem to share…

00:34

…only it’s not just mesquite and high school football that tickle our spurs.

00:40

We want to help you grab life by the horse-collar and tackle it to the ground.

00:43

Hopefully the refs will be looking the other way.

00:48

In Texas, that means taking the End-of-Course, or “EOC”, assessments.

00:53

At least it’s better than having to take the “End of Times” assessments. There’s

00:56

a lot more riding on those. Now, you may feel the EOC is about as welcome

01:04

as a skunk at a lawn party. But with Shmoop’s help, you’ll be saying

01:09

“howdy” to some mighty fine test results. We’ll hook you up with guides for Algebra

01:13

one and two, geometry, biology, chemistry, physics, English one to three, world geography,

01:21

world history and US History. Most of those guides are available on our

01:26

site now; others will be added in 2013.

01:31

Depending on how comfortable you feel with the material…whether it’s cowboy boots

01:34

or diagnostics… …you can either take our lower-level courses…

01:37

…which measure readiness for advanced high school coursework…

01:40

…or you can take our higher-level courses, which measure college readiness.

01:45

Taking and passing the EOC will be part of the graduation requirements beginning with

01:48

the freshman class of 2012… …so it’s worth being prepared.

01:52

After all, you don’t want the test-takers to think this is your first rodeo.

01:57

And keep in mind that EOC assessment scores are worth 15 percent of your final course

02:04

grade. So the sooner you accept how important this

02:08

test is and decide to take the bull by the horns, the better off you’ll be.

02:13

As we always say, you can put your boots in the oven, but that don’t make ‘em biscuits.

02:16

We love us some Texas barbecue. We’re huge fans of the [Cowboys/Texans, depending on

02:16

who is reading this.] We remember the Alamo. In short, we’re Texas through and through…

02:17

except that we don’t live there. We’re thinking of getting a vacation home there

02:18

though.
