We planned the trail and everything.
- 00:21
This is going to be exhausting.

Maybe bring trail mix, or something… [Students preparing for a hike]

So!

First stop?

Businesses.
- 00:28
We've learned lots about businesses, starting with the ever-important question: what sort
- 00:31
of business would you actually want to start? [Children walking together trying to think of a business idea]
- 00:33
Starting a business is a huge investment of both time and money, so you definitely want
- 00:37
it to be something you care about, and that'll turn a profit. [Woman holding a wad of cash and a clock]
- 00:41
So maybe a candy store…
- 00:42
…instead of a business that shoves piles of mud into envelopes.
- 00:45
We also saw how different kinds of math visualizations tie into the business world.
- 00:50
Whether you're using 2-D shapes to design logos and T-shirts… [2D shapes drawn on graph paper]
- 00:53
…using line plots to gather data on T-shirt sizes…
- 00:56
…or calculating distances on a coordinate system to figure out your commute, the visual [Coordinate system showing the distance of various places]
- 01:00
parts of math can be great help in the world of business.
- 01:03
Just make sure you don't do those distance calculations in the middle of your commute. [Boy doing math calculations whilst driving and crashing]
- 01:07
Sometimes road safety's a bit more important than math.
- 01:10
We also learned the importance of decimals and fractions, whether we're using them to
- 01:14
calculate gas prices… [Gas price at the pump rising]
- 01:15
…and design our dream office down to the nearest eighth of an inch.
- 01:19
Because if our office was just half an inch too small, our dreams would totally be shattered. [Olive crying because her office is slightly too small]
- 01:25
We got into the nitty-gritty of business numbers.
- 01:27
Not only did we learn about the most important equations in business (Profits = Sales – Expenses)…
- 01:32
…but we also saw how this equation had effects on how much we charge customers… [Boy at a lemonade stand selling people drinks]
- 01:37
…how we make marketing plans and solicit investors…
- 01:40
…and how we make profit predictions, and calculate future profits.
- 01:44
Luckily, you didn't have to do it alone, since we also learned about a bunch of mathematical [A tool box opening]
- 01:48
tools that help you with these tasks…
- 01:51
…including expressions, the order of operations, and the multiplication and division of fractions
- 01:55
and whole numbers.
- 01:56
As helpful as these mathematical concepts are, they can't go out on a coffee run for [order of operations picking up coffee]
- 02:01
you.
- 02:02
You'll need an intern for that.
- 02:03
It didn't take long for us to see that this was a lot of material to get our heads around…[Students frightened at the math material to learn]
- 02:07
…so we also learned how to write up plan books: handy tools to walk us through all
- 02:11
the steps of planning out our business.
- 02:12
Now if only we had a handy tool to help us remember how to get home from this hike… [Students trying to find a way home from hiking]
- 02:17
Seriously, where are we….?
