Thank you We sneak We're talking about another american favorite

00:07

Actually i've lived close to the street here in san

00:10

francisco Good old caesar Shot is caesar was basically involved

00:14

in a rape protest slash brewing cop First let me

00:19

set the scene Him grapes were a huge deal Still

00:22

our deal here in the bay area there's A lot

00:25

of vineyards and wine things and the line things It's

00:30

a two part system You know you have the growers

00:32

Then you have the workers and the pickers and the

00:33

people who work the fields and stuff like that So

00:35

during this time back in the nineteen sixties a lot

00:38

of good stuff happened in the nineteen sixties This's crazy

00:40

the della no area growers were not treating the workers

00:44

very well you know and the workers They were all

00:47

very upset about it And they you know wanted change

00:50

They wanted to do something so good Oh cesar chavez

00:52

decided to stand up and do the leader and help

00:55

lead this kind of great revolution Talk about grapes of

00:59

wrath And so they protest And caesar actually united the

01:03

latinos and filipino workers And so they grabbed their picket

01:07

Signs and refused to work And so during that time

01:10

you know there were pro testing this is all happening

01:12

during the nineteen sixties the growers were like you guys

01:15

can't do this what's going on here you know And

01:17

so they decided that they wanted to fight back themselves

01:20

and fight back against the workers by spraying them with

01:23

pesticides and using the tag dogs on the other violent

01:27

tactics that kind of hurt them And so cesar chavez

01:30

got word of this and was like what's going on

01:32

over here hey you can't do this and so he

01:35

devised a plan of his own and he led a

01:37

huge boycott and so at this point in time they

01:40

were like okay you guys want to do what you're

01:42

doing so i'm going to start a grassroots campaign and

01:44

i'm going to get the church's involved but i'm going

01:46

to get the volunteers involved and we're going to boycott

01:50

just grapes period So forget about any grapes being eaten

01:53

during that time and i'm sure that that probably heard

01:56

a lot of people or even picking in the grave

01:58

and even beyond that he was like you know i

02:00

won't even take it a step farther literally and we're

02:03

going to march from delhi no all the way to

02:05

sacramento that's three hundred miles And so they march He

02:09

got everybody together and march three hundred miles and half

02:13

of the way through there he was like you know

02:14

what Let me take a picture of this and closest

02:16

up on twitter were quick because you know my feet

02:19

are just killing me Wait So then after the march

02:22

they help found the united farmers of america front and

02:25

so that was all included within the protest and everything

02:29

of the grapes and would lead up to the march

02:31

So then after the march you know things didn't calm

02:35

down at all you know the growers still weren't given

02:37

in the workers still weren't be treated right and so

02:39

that caesar was like okay well i'm going to switch

02:41

things up yet again you know i'm going to do

02:43

the one two on the road quick it was like

02:45

okay so now we're not only boycotting but i'm also

02:47

going on a fast so not only am i eating

02:50

any grapes will not go eat anything You know what

02:53

That'll show them and so then people were supporting him

02:56

and making sure that he got everything that he needed

02:58

I don't know how he survived I could never fast

03:02

i would i snapped like almost every two hours Anyway

03:05

i would be hurt if i was the fat i

03:07

would last for like an hour and i'd be like

03:09

you know what I'm done I can't do this i'm

03:11

in over my head here back to caesar This is

03:14

not about me This is a bad season Caesar fasted

03:17

and you know the boycott continue And so then finally

03:20

within like the early nineteen seventies the growers just were

03:24

getting weary and tired have you do everything themselves And

03:28

then they realized just how much of a job and

03:31

west you know do the work that the workers were

03:34

doing picking the fields and of the grapes and processing

03:37

them and giving them out to you know the different

03:39

industries at the time or what Not And so then

03:42

they finally gave in and they're like okay you know

03:44

what Well all right let's talk about this we couldn't

03:47

sit at the table and you know we're going where

03:49

We're going to figure something out so they decided to

03:51

sign the contract for the workers to join a union

03:54

and that was huge So then back in that day

03:58

was probably are still early nineteen seventies About ten thousand

04:02

workers got union certified war on the union contract but

04:07

not only that they also got a higher compensation They

04:10

also got health insurance which was huge And then they

04:13

also got safety limits for things like pesticides and other

04:16

chemicals that were being used that in the fields that

04:18

the workers were going to be exposed to you know

04:20

they got safety limits on those and how much they

04:23

could be in contact with them or if they could

04:24

even be in contact with him So this was all

04:27

a huge deal and it was all props to cesar

04:30

shot So all of this happened everything was going great

04:34

and then up until twenty fourteen just a couple of

04:37

years ago i am still confused on why this was

04:40

just happening Now president obama declared that march thirty first

04:44

could be cesar chavez day So kudos sonali president obama

04:48

for recognizing the effort in the work of latinos and

04:51

filipino workers back in the day especially here in the

04:54

bay area But also kudos the cesar chavez for leading

04:58

a huge movement for getting worker's rights for things that

05:01

were being overlooked Like some of the jobs that you

05:04

know people wouldn't normally you know recognize or take into 00:05:07.791 --> [endTime] account that need to be done today
