Description:

Really all you have to do is travel into the past. If you change anything at all, boom, you've created an—oh wait...that's an alternate  timeline. Check out the video above if you need to learn how to map out a regular timeline. Like on paper. Not the wacky parallel dimension kind.

[Coop and Dino singing]

00:13

Making a timeline is pretty easy if you know where to start.

00:16

Here’s a timeline of the timeline-making process. [timeline of the timeline-making process]

00:19

As you can see, we should start…right about…here.

00:22

Aren’t these things nifty?

00:24

Timelines are pretty boss. [Coop discussing timelines]

00:25

They help give us perspective by showing what important events have happened over a given

00:29

period of time.

00:30

They also help us keep track of when exactly those events occurred, and what other events [Dino teaching about timelines]

00:34

followed or preceded them.

00:35

And if we’re really lucky…there are pictures…

00:38

To start making our own timeline, we have to think of the first event we want to include. [Arrow pointing to timeline's first event]

00:43

It might be the year we were born, the first memory we have of our childhood or some event [Boy riding a bike and Dad watches]

00:47

like our first birthday.

00:49

Considering all the stuff we’d like to block out and forget about…maybe our timeline

00:53

should start at last Tuesday.

00:55

Once we’ve decided on a starting point, we write down the year and a short description

00:59

of the event.

01:00

We can then continue to add events…and notate when they happened…in the order in which

01:03

they transpired.

01:04

For example, if our timeline started with our first birthday, we might continue with [Timeline showing first birthday]

01:08

our second birthday, and so on.

01:10

But we’ll skip right over our fifth birthday.

01:12

That was the evening of the infamous “cake fight” incident… [Woman chasing man with a cake]

01:16

Timelines can start and end whenever you choose.

01:18

Some timelines include all the important events over a person’s life…

01:21

…while others just include the events over a certain time period.

01:24

And if you’re one of those people who believes that time is a circle, you can make a timeline [Clock ticking]

01:28

that looks like this.

01:30

Of course, if time is a circle, you’ve already created that timeline, so don’t bother.

01:34

Mind.

01:35

Blown. [Boy stood in surprise]
