Here's your shmoop du jour... How should the underlined portion of the below
- 00:07
sentence be changed, if at all? Rachel was nominated for an academic scholarship
- 00:11
because of her hard work, dedication, and ability to understand tough concepts.
- 00:16
And here are the potential answers:
- 00:21
So... what is this question asking?
Full Transcript

Is our sentence okay as is... or does it need a little love?
- 00:27
First of all, is there anything about our sentence that feels wrong?
- 00:32
We have a subject... no dangling participles... commas in the right place...
- 00:37
...so things seem on the up and up. But let's look at the other options and see if there's
- 00:42
a better one. How do we feel about A? We have an "and-comma"
- 00:46
problem here.
- 00:48
When listing items like this, the items should come one after another with only one "and"
- 00:54
before the last one. So A can't be right. What about B?
- 00:58
It would be okay if we added a third "her" before "ability"... but once we initiate
- 01:03
the pattern, we have to stick with it. B's out.
- 01:06
C's no good either. Even though there's no "her" before dedication, it's implied.
- 01:11
It's also implied before the last item in the series... which means it would read as
- 01:15
"and her the ability."
- 01:19
Yuck. So we should leave it as is... and D is our answer.
- 01:23
As in, "Done."
