Description:

What's easy, simple, and comfortable? Adding and subtracting double digit numbers. What's not-so-easy, the opposite of simple, and definitely not comfortable? Fitting 18 clowns into a car. Luckily you'll only have to learn that second part if you enroll in clown school.

Adding Single and Double-Digit Numbers with Carrying, a la Shmoop.

00:09

Klyde the psychedelic clown just bought a shiny, red sports car... and just in time.

00:13

His friends were getting tired of walking to work.

00:15

All 18 of them.

00:17

Actually, Klyde's very lucky to have only 18 friends,

00:20

since it's exactly the number of seats in his car.

00:22

Unfortunately, he didn't take into account his friend's... friends.

00:26

Gonzo has a pet chicken he takes wherever he goes.

00:29

Ditso has an invisible dog that can't stand to be left alone.

00:33

And Arlequino can't travel without his monkey sidekick.

00:37

Klyde had better make room for all these animals.

00:39

How many seats does Klyde's car need in all?

00:42

Klyde needs seats for 18 friends, plus 3 pets.

00:46

What's 18 plus 3?

00:48

When we line up our numbers, the problem looks like this.

00:51

18 has an "8" in the ones place,

00:53

so we add 8 plus 3 to get the final number in the ones place.

00:56

8 plus 3 is 11, but that's too many digits for the ones place.

01:00

That's easy to take care of.

01:01

Leave the number in the ones place, and

01:03

carry the number in the tens place into the tens place column.

01:07

Then add all the numbers in the tens place.

01:09

Looks like Klyde needs 21 seats in his car.

01:12

So he has to make his vehicle a little bigger.

01:14

Maybe it would have been easier to institute a "no pets" policy...
