ACT Science: Conflicting Viewpoint Passage Drill 1, Problem 2. What do both scientists agree about?
Transcript
- 00:03
Hope you're wearing your smartypants and/or thinking cap for this one...
- 00:07
You probably don't need to pause and review the passage,
- 00:10
what with your photographic memory and all,
- 00:12
but... just so you know it's an option...
- 00:19
Both scientists agree that... what?
Full Transcript
- 00:22
And here are the potential answers...
- 00:28
Once again, we want 2 out of 2 scientists to agree on something.
- 00:33
Option A... Auxin is important for creating the plant's pattern.
- 00:37
Be careful with this one...both scientists do mention auxin being important...but this
- 00:42
says that auxin is specifically important to plant patterns.
- 00:46
Not true.
- 00:47
Scientist 1 said auxin is used for producing leaves,
- 00:51
and scientist 2 said auxin DOESN'T tell the plant where to grow leaves.
- 00:55
So that's a no on A.
- 00:57
Now for option B... stress is important for patterning.
- 01:00
Nah. Scientist 1 is entirely stress-free. Well, his paragraph is, anyway.
- 01:04
What about C?
- 01:06
Well, none of the scientists mention plants having ugly patterns...
- 01:10
...let's come back to this one.
- 01:11
Option D. Leaves and flowers are patterned by different mechanisms.
- 01:15
Uh, no. Let's just take a look at Scientist 1's paragraph.
- 01:18
It says that plant patterning is dependent ENTIRELY on auxin.
- 01:23
Well, last time we checked, the entirety of a plant included both the leaves and flowers,
- 01:28
so Scientist 1 would have to disagree with this statement.
- 01:31
Which brings us back to option C... by process of elimination.
- 01:35
Both scientists spent all this time describing the wonders of plant patterning
- 01:39
and if there's one thing these guys know, it's amazing patterns.
- 01:42
Check out those ties.
