Here's your shmoop du jour.

Which ordered pair is not on the line shown?
- 00:08
And here are your options...
- 00:12
OK so it's one of those "NOT" questions. Which means we have to go through each answer
- 00:17
choice to figure out which one of those ordered pairs is NOT on the line...(0,1).
Full Transcript
- 00:22
Yup the line intersects the y-axis
- 00:25
at (0,1). (-4, -2)...yeah... the line intersects that
- 00:29
point in the bottom left-hand quadrant of the coordinate plane.
- 00:32
(-4, -1)...wait didn't we just have the x coordinate of -4 correspond with the y-coordinate
- 00:38
of negative 2?
- 00:41
The definition of functions tells us that that every input has one and only one output.
- 00:46
So if (-4,-2) is on the line... (-4,-1) can't be. Looks like our answer has to be C.
- 00:54
But just to be sure...(4,5) is on the line in the upper right hand corner here...
- 00:58
Last choice...(2, 2.5). The graph doesn't
- 01:02
have perfect tick marks...but it looks close enough...definitely more accurate than (-4,-1).
- 01:07
So our answer is indeed C.
