- 00:10
a'la Shmoop... What happens during the climax And why is
- 00:15
it so important So before we even get to the
- 00:19
rumble something pretty terrible happens Ponyboys with his friend
- 00:24
johnny and they get jumped by a bunch of social [Johnny and Ponyboy jumped]
Full Transcript
- 00:28
is that's the rival social is johnny gets really seriously
- 00:34
hurt by a guy named Bob and in self defence
- 00:39
he kills bob right So now the two gangs more
- 00:44
than ever are at each other's throats and there's going [Gangmembers appear]
- 00:47
to be a rumble there's going to be a really
- 00:48
big showdown Basically what happens during the rumble is you
- 00:52
have a bunch of kids going at it They really [Two gangs preparing to fight]
- 00:56
want to hurt each other Yeah and in the end
- 01:01
thie greasers do win But it's not really a victory
- 01:05
because they're just as beat up as the social is
- 01:09
they are tauron apart bleeding all over the place What
- 01:14
does winning really mean to the characters They just have
- 01:19
more people standing there They're the last ones to run [Greasers with bruised faces]
- 01:23
away or they don't run away So yeah exactly That's
- 01:27
a question you might ask of the whole book What
- 01:30
does it actually mean tto win if everyone is suffering [Boy screaming as johnny on the floor bleeding]
- 01:34
there and so the greasers are beat up Tourney up
- 01:38
And they all run to the hospital to go see
- 01:40
their friend johnny to see if he is going to
- 01:43
make it What happens to johnny cade So johnny dies
- 01:51
just before he dies Pony boy and the others make [Johnny dies in hospital]
- 01:54
it to the hospital And johnny tells pony boy to
- 01:58
stay gold which is a reference to a robert frost
- 02:02
poem The line Nothing gold can stay is one that
- 02:06
pony boy had recited when he and johnny were watching
- 02:09
the sun rise from a mountain Are we supposed to [Johnny and Ponyboy watching sunrise]
- 02:14
be surprised by the fact that they're reading robert frost
- 02:17
Yeah ponyboy and johnny are really smart Ponyboy especially And
- 02:24
the whole point of this book is that ponyboy is
- 02:28
incredibly thoughtful and smart He's not necessarily Like the other
- 02:33
gang members He gets pulled into all of this because [Ponyboy pulled into gang by giant hand]
- 02:36
he cares about them so much but because he knows
- 02:39
better he has pretty serious reservations all along About whether
- 02:43
or not he should be doing this, So he
- 02:46
really is He really is gold Is there a moral
- 02:51
to this story This book is more or less moralistic
- 02:56
S.E Hinton was not at all like any of
- 02:59
the greasers was a very good student and a responsible [S.E Hinton in classroom]
- 03:03
kid and wrote this book pretty much from her imagination
- 03:07
So it makes sense that it's a writer who is
- 03:11
a little bit of a goody two shoes trying to
- 03:14
extract moral lessons from the life have some grungy gang
- 03:18
members What happens during the climax And why is it [Questions appear]
- 03:25
so important What does winning really mean to the character
