doing so hot He was hit by stroke after stroke

after stroke unable to really move or speak he was

result of lenin's long demise was worthy of the soapy
- 00:21
ist episodes of daytime television let's dive into the suds
- 00:25
shall we Well leon trotsky was lennon's golden boy Not
- 00:29
only was he educated but he had actual political experience
- 00:34
Trotsky had been the commissars of foreign affairs during the
- 00:37
breast liftoff sk treaty He'd made decisions as the comets
- 00:41
are of war that won the russian civil war for
- 00:44
the bolsheviks And while he had been a mention vic
- 00:47
as a younger man trotsky came over to the dark
- 00:49
side Later everybody pretty much assumed leon was the man
- 00:53
who would eventually be king This did not sit well
- 00:56
with joseph stalin who didn't have trotsky is experience and
- 01:00
education but did have plenty of good old fashioned crazy
- 01:04
Stalin was good at two things he could make strategic
- 01:06
alliances that benefited him in the state It was also
- 01:10
really really good at repressing the heck out of the
- 01:13
russian people A trade that greatly displeased linen Well as
- 01:17
lenin's health took a nose dive and it became clear
- 01:21
that he was on a beeline for the grave Trotsky
- 01:23
and stalin began jockeying for lenin's position Stalin took the
- 01:27
competition very seriously As the central committee general secretary also
- 01:32
known as the gatekeeper of the communist party he and
- 01:35
his allies undermined trotsky at every opportunity Lenin was not
- 01:40
cool with this and over time he got more and
- 01:42
more irritated with stalin He also did everything he could
- 01:46
to help trotsky But then in march nineteen twenty three
- 01:49
lenin had a stroke that put him completely out of
- 01:52
commission Golden boy leon became the bleeding human in the
- 01:55
water and stalin was the circling great white shark Over
- 01:59
the next nine months he manipulated people into supporting him
- 02:03
He lied He even patted the votes at the party
- 02:06
congress Then in january nineteen twenty for while trotsky was
- 02:10
recovering from an illness lenin kicked the bucket and stalin
- 02:13
made his move Trotsky had left russia before lennon's death
- 02:17
and didn't get home in time for the funeral because
- 02:20
stalin didn't advertise when the event would be held with
- 02:23
lenin in the ground and trotsky overseas stalin was able
- 02:26
to keep lenin's dying words a secret and what were
- 02:30
those dying words Was it rose but maybe not Well
- 02:33
basically that stalin wasn't fit to lead russia and that
- 02:36
giving him the central committee general secretary position had been
- 02:40
a huge mistake But again lenin's last words were hushed
- 02:44
up Furthermore lenin never actually named trotsky his successor which
- 02:48
meant stalin was free to fight for the spot Trotsky
- 02:51
did go home to russia and he even managed to
- 02:53
put forward some economic ideas that woud some of sahlins
- 02:57
besties to his side But by october nineteen twenty seven
- 03:01
stalin was completely comfortable making the claim that he was
- 03:04
lenin's successor and that trotsky was working against him well
- 03:08
In nineteen twenty nine trotsky was exiled The power hungry
- 03:12
stalin centralized the government killed lennon's new economic policy and
- 03:17
confiscated the kulak grain hordes When some members of the
- 03:21
communist party spoke out against stalin's policies it quickly became
- 03:24
clear that stalin was not the kind of boss who
- 03:27
liked to hear constructive criticism from his underlings by the
- 03:30
nineteen thirties The soviet union was a very quiet place 00:03:34.445 --> [endTime] Indeed one even might say silent as the grave
