Exactly how steamy is this story?

Perhaps because Cather was writing in 1918, most of the sex in My Ántonia is sub-textual. First there is the relationship between Ántonia and Jim, which on the surface is about as chaste as a elementary school picnic. We suspect that Jim harbors romantic feelings for his friend, but we don't get to hear about them. He kisses her by the gate one night, but she stops it before it goes any further. Lena seems to be the center of the real sexual action here, but again it's all underneath the text and not on the surface.
