Stanley

Stanley may not be the hero type, but he is definitely the protagonist of Holes. It's his journey that we follow throughout the course of the book, and his thoughts that we hear as we go along. And whatever his limitations may be, he's an immensely likeable character. There are other sympathetic characters – Zero comes to mind, of course – but we identify most with Stanley. Does that make us heroes, too? Yeah, we'll go with it.
