Word problems are awesome because they help you visualize the math, and you can see examples that could come right out of your daily life.

Example 1

You are whipping up your uncle's famous honey chipotle BBQ sauce for a school fundraiser. The recipe calls for 3/4 cup of sugar. You need to make 5 batches of sauce. How much sugar do you need?



Example 2

You decide to dye your hair various colors for Halloween. If you dye 1/3 of it blue, 1/4 pink, and 1/4 black, how much of your original hair color is left?



Exercise 1

You and your two siblings are going to split a batch of 24 cookies. You, being the smartest, get 3/8 of the batch. Your brother and sister will have to split the remaining 5/8. How many cookies does each person get?


Exercise 2

You are starting a new exercise program and want to run five miles a day. The path around the park is 5/6 mile long. How many laps must you run to make your target distance?
