Protagonist
Character Role Analysis
Protagonist: Jeanne
How do we know Jeanne's our protagonist? The easy answer: the book is supposed to be her story about internment. The fact that she's kind of your classic good person (she doesn't do anything morally wrong) just adds to her position as the protagonist. Plus, her story about Manzanar is the most complete one out of all the other characters—we get to follow her into adulthood, joining her when she returns to Manzanar and reflects on the lessons learned from her time there. That's something we tend to do with protagonists.
