If you couldn't tell from her name, Kismine is the romantic interest for our young protagonist. The love story isn't central to the story, but it's part of the "coming-of-age" element of the genre (see "Genre" for a full discussion). As John learns more about life, wealth, and values, he also learns a bit about love, and Kismine is a key part of this.
