Character Role Analysis

The Stranger

The stranger is the point of friction in the story. We’re rooting for Dan’l Webster and for Jim Smiley, despite the fact that we know the odds are stacked in their favor because of all the training that Dan’l Webster had. When the stranger fills Dan’l with quail shot, we recognize him as the classic bad guy – a liar, who cheats to get ahead.
