Self-Monitoring
Categories: Financial Theory
How flexibly a person chills, compared to what’s going on around him/her. Grass in the wind.
People who are good at self-monitoring adjust to what’s going on around them. They understand that, if the pizza place is out of pepperoni, they can get their meat fix by having sausage on the pizza instead. Or they can suck it up and just get plain cheese pizza. Someone who doesn’t self-monitor will sit there and wonder what they’re going to eat and fuss about the lack of pepperoni.
To take it even further, a self-monitoring person can also adapt to the behaviors of people around him/her. Richard is relatively quiet at work. It’s a stressful environment due to a significant number of layoffs. He works hard, doesn’t get involved in office gossip, and those in charge really like him…mostly because of the gossip thing. After work, he’s about as extroverted as one can get. He’s starting his own business on the side and spends a lot of time talking to people and building his network.
He adapts from environment to environment. He chills, with or without Netflix.
