The term refers to the practice of selling stuff, often shmata (maybe cheap clothing), into retail distribution channels. And beyond.
Merchandisers handle the long list of to-do items, from tracking manufacturing to consulting on product to handling the marketing processes to cutting the distribution deals for stocking product.
Merchandise on the shelves. Hopefully it sells.
